Maggie is an Anishinaabe kwe from Garden River First Nation with mixed European ancestry. She grew up in Bolton Ontario before moving to Nogojiwanong (Peterborough, ON) for her undergraduate studies. She recently completed her Honours B.A. in Indigenous Environmental Sciences & Studies from Trent University. 

Maggie joined Egesta as a research assistant under the supervision of Dr. Gunilla Oberg. She will be researching in the ‘Learning in the Government’ spiral of the All Our Chemical Relations project. Her undergrad focused on using the skills and gifts of Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science within the Environmental Sciences/Studies field. She is particularly interested in land-based learning and spent her last year of her undergraduate studies focusing on land-based education and youth mental health. 

Maggie has always had a love for the land and waters. Growing up by the Humber River and on the Oak Ridges Moraine, she was always outside. That manifested in her love for outdoor education and learning from the land. 

Maggie acknowledges and thanks her various mentors for passing down valuable knowledge that she will bring to her work Namely Dr. Dan Longboat, Dr. Barbara Moktthewenkwe Wall, Jack Hoggarth, Dr. Chris Furgal, her mother, father, auntie, cousins, community, Elder Whabagoon, and Liat Margolis… to name a few. These people have shaped her values and understanding of Indigenous knowledge, instilling in her principles of respect, reciprocity, and responsibility that she hopes to carry forward in advancing more sustainable and just relationships with the natural world.
